DeMille as a publicity stunt to promote his film The Ten Commandments. By the beginning of the twenty-first century in the U. Many commentators see this issue as part of a wider culture war between liberal and conservative elements in American society. In response to the perceived attacks on traditional society, other legal organizations, such as the Liberty Counsel , have risen to advocate the conservative interpretation. Many Christian conservatives have taken the banning of officially sanctioned prayer from public schools by the U.

Supreme Court as a threat to the expression of religion in public life. In response, they have successfully lobbied many state and local governments to display the ten commandments in public buildings. Those who oppose the posting of the ten commandments on public property argue that it violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. In contrast, groups like the Fraternal Order of Eagles who support the public display of the ten commandments claim that the commandments are not necessarily religious but represent the moral and legal foundation of society, and are appropriate to be displayed as a historical source of present-day legal codes.

Also, some argue like Judge Roy Moore that prohibiting the public practice of religion is a violation of the first amendment's guarantee of freedom of religion. They conclude that the ten commandments are derived from Judeo-Christian religions, to the exclusion of others: the statement "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" excludes non-monotheistic religions like Hinduism , for example.

Whether the Constitution prohibits the posting of the commandments or not, there are additional political and civil rights issues regarding the posting of what is construed as religious doctrine. Excluding religions that have not accepted the ten commandments creates the appearance of impropriety. The courts have been more accepting, however, of displays that place the Ten Commandments in a broader historical context of the development of law.

One result of these legal cases has been that proponents of displaying the Ten Commandments have sometimes surrounded them with other historical texts to portray them as historical, rather than religious. Another result has been that other religious organizations have tried to put monuments to their laws on public lands. For example, an organization called Summum has won court cases against municipalities in Utah for refusing to allow the group to erect a monument of Summum aphorisms next to the ten commandments.

The cases were won on the grounds that Summum's right to freedom of speech was denied and the governments had engaged in discrimination. Instead of allowing Summum to erect its monument, the local governments chose to remove their ten commandments. Two famous films with this name were directed by Cecil B. DeMille : a silent movie which was released in and starred Theodore Roberts as Moses and a colour VistaVision version which was released in , and starred Charlton Heston as Moses.

The receipt of the Ten Commandments by Moses was satirized in Mel Brooks 's movie History of the World Part I , which shows Moses played by Brooks, in a similar costume to Charlton Heston 's Moses in the film , receiving three tablets containing fifteen commandments, but before he can present them to his people, he stumbles and drops one of the tablets, shattering it. He then presents the remaining tablets, proclaiming Ten Commandments. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Those who attempt to impose a principle of monotheism on the Ten Commandments are simply anticipating the historical development of the tradition ahead of its time and are thus already assuming what they pretend to discover. Part of a series on. I am the Lord thy God , which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Honour thy father and thy mother. Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. That little verb is to blame. It is, in this context, ominously suggestive of the pretentious, the misguided, the monumentally silly.

Val Kilmer is Batman? Val Kilmer is Jim Morrison? It worked. But Moses? Indeed the dire visions evoked by that unassuming "is" are realized, woe unto us, in this big, fat biblical boondoggle. The story of Moses leading the Hebrews out of captivity in Egypt has inspired artists as disparately talented as Cecil B. DeMille and Arnold Schoenberg. And there is ample precedent for deriving successful pop-musical entertainment from scriptural sources. But "The Ten Commandments" is unlikely to match their success, and it certainly will not supplant DeMille's campy movie epic in anyone's affections.

This bland, static, overproduced and underdirected musical all but submerges the famous episodes from Moses' life in an oily sea of pleasant but unremarkable pop music.

The legendary journey unfolds here like a long, lumbering fancy-dress episode of "American Idol. He saw it in Paris, where it opened in , and decided to redesign it for American consumption. This season's model features an entirely new score, with music by Patrick Leonard, a songwriter and producer responsible for some of Madonna's catchiest chart-toppers "Like a Prayer" , and lyrics by Maribeth Derry.

But their collaboration gives few hints of what made the original French production, created and directed by Elie Chouraqui, a runaway hit. The new team fails most crucially at the essential task of storytelling. Audiences who have not recently reacquainted themselves with the popular legends about Moses' life will not be enlightened here.

In this sung-through musical Ms. Derry has eschewed lyrics serving the mundane functions of defining or even identifying characters, or delineating the basics of the plot. Comprehension would be aided by the use of name tags or, better yet, football jerseys. The friendship between Moses and Ramses, raised as brothers, vaguely emerges, as does their rivalry for the love of the sexy Nefertari. Don't look for this in the Bible. The musical spends much of its time on Moses' early adulthood, not described in the Scriptures, but vividly depicted as a sand-swept soap opera in the DeMille picture.

Most of the major turning points and transitions in Moses' life are impossible to discern, and ancillary characters brother Aaron, for one are virtually unidentifiable. Iscove's direction, abetted by cheesy hieroglyphic vogueing from the choreographer Travis Payne, also obscures more than it clarifies. The stage is perpetually awash in buffed slaves pushing slabs of stone and statuary around trying to escape the torments of their personal trainers -- er, I mean their cruel Egyptian overlords. While they labor histrionically at the fringes, the principal performers trade places center stage, often dropping to their knees for emotive emphasis, trying to outdo one another in stretching a single syllable into a showstopper.

The cast boasts a strong assortment of steel-plated pop voices, but Adam Lambert, who plays Joshua, is the most consistent crowd-wower. View all New York Times newsletters.

Leonard is certainly a skilled pop craftsman, and his undulating melodies are often smooth and alluring, but they tend to blur together, aside from a couple of jubilant numbers especially the pseudo-gospel anthem "Horns of Jericho". The reams of pedestrian lyrics supplied by Ms.

Derry do little to add variety. She employs contemporary language that is often deflating, if not ludicrous, in the context of the literal-minded ancient Egyptian set and costume designs. To cite a single, prominent example, Ms.
