The town's glamour has remained intact. Its appeal undimmed since the s, when the Duc de Morny, politician, financier, half brother of Napoleon III and man about town, first looked across from already popular Trouville at Deauville's wide, empty sands and persuaded three friends to join him in creating an exclusive enclave of villas, plus a racecourse and a train link to Paris. A Corsican odyssey.

Around it was further embellished with a casino, one of the most beautiful in Europe; the grand hotels Normandy and Royal; and a second racecourse; and — in the Twenties — with its famous boardwalk, the Promenade des Planches. One turn-of-the-century house is open to the public, and well worth a visit: the fairy-tale neo-Norman Villa Strassburger.
Listed a Monument Historique, its interior has been frozen in time since the Twenties when it was purchased from Baron Henri de Rothschild by American millionaire and racehorse breeder Ralph Strassburger, who installed himself there every year during the racing season with his wife and son. His son donated it, still furnished, to the town in The pretty bedrooms and wonderful retro bathrooms are the best — I wanted to move in and never leave.
But it's to the beach that everyone, me included, quickly gravitates, though more to stroll and sunbathe, see and be seen, than to swim: that's for Trouville.

Surprisingly, there's free access for all to Deauville's vast white sands, so I hired one of Deauville's gaily coloured deck chairs and famous parasols, folded in a way unique to the town, and later strolled the glamorous boardwalk past the mosaic Pompeian Baths and the long row of wooden bathing cabins, each named after film stars who have attended the American Film Festival, held here every September.
There's plenty of people-watching in the Bar du Soleil or the Bar de la Mer, where it's easy to picture devotees of the past, such as Coco Chanel or Colette, or reminisce about Un Homme et Une Femme, the film which forever connected the town to romance and to its theme tune, Chabadabada. One sight that I'm glad I didn't miss, though it meant getting up before dawn: tight knots of racehorses pounding the beach at sunrise.

Trouville, by contrast, makes no such demands. Reaching the town by three-minute ferry ride at high tide, if it had been low tide I could have used the duckboards laid out on the riverbed I crossed into France 's first ever seaside resort and immediately warmed to its carefree air, thanks to its south-facing waterfront boulevard, its trawlers and fish market, aquarium, children's amusements and wonderfully florid casino and town hall. I came across one, La Belle Iloise, devoted to nothing but shelf upon photogenic shelf of canned fish. Little did I imagine that I would leave Trouville with a gift box packed with tinned sardines, but I did.
I dressed down for Trouville. I frolicked on the beach, splashed in the sea and tucked into moules frites at Les Vapeurs, listening to the gossip of locals and watching the passers-by… and a typical Trouville day was done.

If you avoid hiring one of Deauville's famous folding parasols, you can soak up Deauville's glamour for free, even in high season: there's no charge for pitching camp on the beach.
Walk the length of Trouville beach for a marvellous array of florid and often eccentric 19th-century houses, some built for mistresses of the great and good who flocked here. As well as famous names such as Cartier and Gucci, there are plenty of charming and idiosyncratic shops to browse.
Just outside Deauville, set among stud farms. At the same time, by adopting the role of a victim and accusing the members of Parliament of inappropriate behaviour and disrespect, Tristan conceals her own transgressions and establishes an alternative set of social rules.
