The difference is slight and could be the result of the unfavourable geometry of the handles. If it reflects a real difference it would indicate that the bowls and handles were cast separately. This would make turning the bowls easier, but no traces of solder have been bound as evidence to suggest by joining together a handle and bowl which were cast separately.

Les fabuleux trésors du Nil

Radiographs show some mottling on the sides of the bowl which indicates that some working was carried out. Any visible evidence of hammering was removed by turning both the inside and outside of each bowl on the lathe. This was also used to turn lines around the pips in the bowls to decorate them. The handles and the flanges were scraped to clean them up and also to make the facets on the handles. Recesses were cut for the niello inlay on the flange, using a sharp chisel-shaped tool. The niello has been studied by La Niece The author would like to thank her colleagues at the British Museum for their help and advice during the present study.

Un collier de la Walters Fig. Introduction The jewellery was found with items of silver plate on the Hill of Saint Louis, Carthage, Tunisia, during the last century.

Analysis The jewellery was examined with a low-powered optical microscope. The translucent blue polished stones of the earrings and necklace are sapphires, with the exception of a pair of adjacent blue-grey stones with no intervening emerald. Fabrication The objects were examined by both optical and scanning electron microscopy.

Table 1 - Analysis of necklace AF semi-quantitative i Links adjacent to the chalcedony and cordierite stones. Table 2 - Analysis of the earrings semi-quantitative i AF Etude technique 93 ii AF Note : the location of the areas of analysis are shown in fig. Table 4 - Analysis of the loop-in-loop chain AF Conclusions The metal and stones used for the jewellery and the constructional methods employed to make it are those which one might expect to find on objects from the period. The main features are : 1 - Emeralds and sapphires were used in the earrings and necklace.

Etude technique Introduction The Carthage treasure, dated to late antiquity, was found on the Hill of St. Analysis The silver was analysed by energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence XRF using a system with a 40 W tungsten target x-ray tube and a PC-based multichannel analyser. The gilded areas were not abraded, however, as the gilded layer is extremely thin and would be removed by nical cleaning.

Fabrication The visual examination was carried out using a low-powered binocular microscope with a magnification of between 10X and 40X. Etude technique 97 Examination of the objects indicates that they were initially cast. Beads on the rim of bowl AF Objects from the Carthage Treasure a Flanged bowl AF The worked silver bowl has a broad flat flange, decorated with beading at the edge and ornamented with four pastoral groups chased in low relief.

Examination and discussion Examination suggests that the silver to make the bowl was probably first cast to a suitable shape, such as a disc. The rim was formed and the design punched at the centre and at least partly chased before the bowl was shaped by sinking.

Examination and discussion The bowl is similar to AF in general construction but one or two features worth noting were observed. The Analysis. Examination and discussion The bowls appear to have been approximately cast to shape and then turned on the lathe. Analysis Radiography shows that the bowl was raised. Examination and discussion e Two flat silver dishes with gilding and inscriptions AF The shallow silver dishes stand on low footrings and have punched decoration, inscriptions and gilding.

Etude technique Examination and discussion The bowls were cast and then worked to shape. Examination and discussion The recent archaeological discovery of Roman moulds for casting spoons from bronze suggests that Roman spoons were often cast to shape Budd, Bayley Stylistically the spoons can be divided into three types : i The two spoons with pear-shaped bowls and plain discs AF , Examination and discussion The spoons were probably cast close to their final shape, including their handles. Acknowledgements The author would like to thank her colleagues at the British Museum for their help and advice during the present study.
