The Wages of Sin
A perfect spotless sacrifice offered in just the right way can pay our sin. This was accomplished by the finished work on the cross by Christ. Let us go a little further and see the contrast, the Gift of God is eternal life. Where did this begin? All the back to the beginning, Genesis , Adam and Eve earned a death sentence because of their actions.
The meaning and origin of the expression: The wages of sin is death
They did not immediately fall down dead physically, so the meaning was there was a Spiritual death sentence they appropriated upon themselves. What work did these wages or pay result from? Thus their sin has transmitted to all, through our sin nature, bringing the same spiritual death or separation from God. Physical death is the result of spiritual death.
This is the Ruin. Jesus's Work on our behalf earned us Eternal Life as a gift if we accept it.
See a Problem?
Our efforts or work only brings death, because it could never be enough to please or satisfy God's requirement, it's short of His mark Romans Employees in the rich world who suddenly receive more money per hour—when their taxes are cut, for example—tend not to work less, as they might do if they had a fixed income target in mind.
They work more. But given that the rewards from corruption had not gone up, this does not explain why Ghanaian police officers engaged in more graft. Mr Foltz and Mr Opoku-Agyemang, whose research was funded by the International Growth Centre at the London School of Economics, suggest that corrupt superiors or greedy relatives might have demanded more money from the officers. The pay rise may have boosted their sense of their own worth, leading them to demand more money.
It might be that the risk of being caught in Ghana is so low that normal calculations of risk and reward do not apply. Perhaps a combination of higher pay, political leadership and stiff punishments would have stopped corruption: it did in Singapore, for example. But money alone is not enough.
What does it mean that the wages of sin is death?
In Ghana, some are astonished that anybody could have believed that higher pay would have made cops less greedy. That is just not human nature. Join them. Subscribe to The Economist today. Media Audio edition Economist Films Podcasts. New to The Economist?
