Eichendorff: Lieder - Discography - Imogen Cooper
Although the three-movement format is an instrumental tradition, this work can at times sound like an operatic duet for soprano and tenor in the style of Rossini, whose operas Mendelssohn enjoyed. The introductory first movement can be thought of as a parallel to operatic recitative, basset horn at times a character on stage, and at other times accompanying. The ravishing slow movement is a true operatic duet between clarinet and basset horn in the bel canto style over a simple guitar-like accompaniment in the piano. Composed in with his brother Paul in mind, it is the second of two cello sonatas Mendelssohn composed—the first, the Sonata in B-flat Major, Op.
The opening Allegro assai vivace, full of soaring lyricism and rhythmic energy, recalls the opening of his Italian Symphony in character.
Immediately noticeable is how equal he makes the two instruments in the presentation of thematic material. The second movement offers further Romantic cantabile, but couched in a signature Mendelssohnian scherzo. Composed over the course of his career, the Lieder ohne Worte were published in eight volumes comprising six songs apiece, and provide an essential snapshot of Romanticism.
Mendelssohn wrote the first Lieder ohne Worte for his elder sister, Fanny—the second musical prodigy in the Mendelssohn family-on the occasion of her birthday in But it was not until a few years later, in , that he hit upon the idea of publishing a set of piano lieder as a counterpart to a set of songs. Mendelssohn never authorized the now-prevalent descriptive titles retro-fitted to the pieces in later editions by publishers.

As the pre-eminent Mendelssohn scholar R. As early as Hugo Wolf had been attracted to the limpid, melodious verses of Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff — But for the most part Wolf rejected his nocturnal nature lyrics. Der Musikant is a tribute to his friends who had helped defray the cost of publication of the Eichendorff Lieder and had encouraged him through his depression.
